A Pit Stop in Hong Kong

From an iconic skyline, delicious food, beautiful nature and colourful traditions, Hong Kong is a lovely destination for everyone. For many people Hong Kong is a stopover before they fly to the next destination. It lies at a central point in Asia from where you can fly to many different places. I visited Hong Kong for a week in 2015, but at the end of my 5-month travel last year I decided to make a pit stop in Hong Kong before I would fly back to The Netherlands. For 24 hours I (re)visited Hong Kong again and I loved it. It is true what they say: Hong Kong is always ready for you!

How to enjoy Hong Kong in 24 hours

Arriving in Hong Kong

The airport of Hong Kong is not on the main island of the city, but by train it is very easy to go from the airport to the main island. You can book a train ticket at the airport and you will be taken directly to the centre of the city. If you book a (cheaper) hotel or hostel online, be aware that even if it looks big on pictures, it can be really small in real life. I stayed in the area Tsim Sha Tsui, which is the best neighbourhood if you only have a couple of hours to stay in the city.

Walk around town

It depends what time you arrive and what you have planned of course, but I arrived late at night and had not made any plans. As I was quite exhausted from a whole day of flying (I flew from Puerto Princessa to Manilla and from there to Hong Kong), I decided to walk around town, enjoy the city lights and the nice warm evening. As a treat to myself, I made a spontaneous decision to get a wonderful food and body massage so that I would be completely zen for my last hours of travelling. You will find a lot of these massage places in Hong Kong.

Hop on Hop off Bus

Grab some breakfast at Starbucks (yes Starbucks was my choice that day) and hop on a ‘Hop on Hop off Bus’ to see as much as possible in one day. I didn’t do this myself this time (as I have been in Hong Kong before), but I can definitely recommend this. It is a lovely (not exhausting) way to see the city.

Relax in the Kowloon Park

In every city I visit a park. It is a tradition I have and I always try do this. Parks are the best way to escape the busy city life, where you can relax, read a book or just give your feet some rest from all the walking. In Hong Kong this is the Kowloon Park for me. You can find this park in the area Tsim Sha Tsui.

Go to the Hello Kitty Dim Sum Restaurant

After all the walking and sightseeing it is time for some food! You are in Hong Kong and you want something special to eat? Then you should go to the Hello Kitty Dim Sum Restaurant (located at: Lee Loy Mansion, Canton Rd, Yau Ma Tei). The whole restaurant is decorated with Hello Kitty images, which is funny and very cute!

Symphony of Lights

The last stop before you go back to the airport is one that you should definitely not miss. Every night at the Victoria Harbour there is the Symphony of Lights. This nightly multimedia show involves more than 40 buildings on both sides of the harbour. It is named the ‘World’s Largest Permanent Light and Sound Show’ by Guinness World Records and it is every day at 8 pm sharp. It is the perfect way to end your 24-hour trip to Hong Kong.
